Philadelphia toynbee tiles11/15/2023 To see some for yourself, take a walk on Chestnut Street starting at 16th, ending at 12th. You may also be interested in the documentary film called Resurrect Dead about the Toynbee tiles. In the late 1980s, a cryptic message from an unknown creator began to appear in the streets of Philadelphia. The mention of Toynbee on the tiles is believed to be with reference to Arnold. The Toynbee tiles have also been cited in some South American cities such as Chile and Brazil. Philly is the epicenter of Toynbee tiles, and one photographer and researcher has gone through the painstaking effort of mapping them all out. Many of the tiles were discovered in Philadelphia, Washington DC, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and Boston among other US cities. Many of the tiles are still around today for you to discover. Apparently they are all over the Eastern US. It's up to Streets, a department that regularly deals with 19th century infrastructure, to do some 19th century conservation, so later generations might appreciate this quirk, a time before the Internet, a time when a Philadelphian could argue that planting tiles in the street was a more. Then years later, I noticed them in New York City. Toynbee Tiles are going the way of the passenger pigeon. I’d cross an intersection and find a tile beneath my feet. I started noticing these tiles around Philly when I was a kid in the ’80s and ’90s. They carry the artist’s ideas about humanity’s possible future where humans can be reborn on Jupiter in a heavenly sort of afterlife. How did they get installed? Not really sure. What are they? They are colorful and intricate tiles placed in streets all over Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that, since 2015, Streets Department of Philadelphia has recognized Toynbee tiles as street art rather than vandalism, but will only preserve tiles if there is a fast and affordable method for removing them. Toynbee Tiles are an enigma, a decades-old mystery that seems to be the work of one anonymous artist whose original goal was to start a human colony on Jupiter.
